We have visited multiple locations throughout New Jersey, but this trip was all about American Dream Mall. If you are looking for a place where entertainment, attractions, and food are all under one roof, this spot delivers.
Big Snow
One of the highlights of our visit was Big Snow. If you plan to go, I highly recommend arriving early. We went in the afternoon and it was very busy. There are multiple steps before you even get into the snow. You have to wait to get your boots fitted and then wait again to receive your ski gear. During peak hours, those lines can take some time.
Thankfully, my son handled the wait well and did not become overstimulated. Once inside, he truly enjoyed himself. From skiing to simply playing in the snow, there were plenty of activities to keep him engaged. The indoor snow experience is unique and gives kids a chance to enjoy winter fun any time of year.
DreamWorks Water Park
We had tickets to DreamWorks Water Park, but unfortunately it was closed for the day due to an emergency. Our tickets were purchased in advance and we were refunded without any issues. While we did not get to experience it this time, the park features water slides, a wave pool, and themed attractions based on DreamWorks characters.
Nickelodeon Universe
We also visited Nickelodeon Universe, and my son completely loved it. It is one of the largest indoor theme parks in the country and packed with rides and character experiences.
Here are some things to do at Nickelodeon Universe:
- Thrill rides for older kids and teens
- Family friendly roller coasters
- Character meet and greets
- Themed rides inspired by SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- An indoor Ferris wheel
- Toddler friendly rides
- Arcade style games
There is something for every age level, which makes it easier when visiting as a family.
Sensory Friendly Things to Do at American Dream
American Dream can get busy, but there are ways to make it manageable and enjoyable for families with sensory needs.
- Visit early in the day on weekdays when crowds are lighter
- Take breaks in quieter seating areas throughout the mall
- Choose calmer rides at Nickelodeon Universe
- Bring headphones or preferred comfort items
- Build in snack and rest breaks
- Walk the mall before peak hours to help with familiarity
The mall is spacious, which helps when you need room to move around or step away from stimulation.
There are also plenty of food options throughout the mall, from quick service spots to full restaurants. This makes it easier when traveling with a child who has specific food preferences. We also noticed motorized stuffed animals that kids can ride around the mall, which adds an extra layer of fun while exploring.
Overall we had a great time and would visit again on a less busy day.
Traveling with an autistic child is not about perfection. It is about flexibility, preparation, and celebrating every win along the way.
