Sensory Friendly Family Adventures in Rapid City
Rapid City is a strong base for families exploring western South Dakota, especially those traveling with autistic children or sensory sensitive kids. Between wildlife encounters, hands on museums, famous landmarks, and scenic drives, we found a wide variety of activities that allowed our son to explore at his own pace.
Here is how we spent our time in the area, along with tips for planning a sensory friendly visit.
Dinosaurs and Reptiles Up Close
Set high above the city, Dinosaur Park features giant concrete dinosaur sculptures and sweeping views. The outdoor layout and open space made it easy to move slowly, take breaks, and avoid feeling rushed.
This was one of our favorite stops.
What families can expect:
- Feeding fish and turtles
- A chance to touch a tortoise
- Prairie dogs popping in and out of tunnels
- A bubble style viewing area that allows close up animal viewing
The spread out paths and outdoor setting helped keep stimulation levels manageable.
Located right next door to Reptile Gardens, this stop was perfect for my little dinosaur lover. Fossils, skeletons, and prehistoric displays gave him plenty to explore while moving through the space at his own pace. It made for an easy back to back outing focused on animals and ancient history.
Visiting a National Landmark
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Seeing Mount Rushmore in person is a memorable experience. Entry is free, though parking was $10 in 2021.
Why this worked well for our family:
- Wide walkways and outdoor viewing areas
- Benches for rest breaks
- Plenty of space to pause and take in the scenery
- The option to keep visits short or linger longer depending on your child’s needs
Hands On Aviation History
South Dakota Air and Space Museum
This museum is free to visit and filled with interactive exhibits. Touch friendly displays and aircraft exploration made this a great learning stop for kids who enjoy movement based activities.
Wildlife From the Comfort of Your Car
This drive through park took about an hour and a half and allowed us to see far more than just bears.
Animals we spotted included:
- Elk
- Mountain goats
- Coyotes
- Mountain lions
- Other North American wildlife
During our visit, my son suddenly had to use the bathroom while we were in the middle of the tour with our car surrounded by bears. Getting out was not an option, so I had to make it work in the moment and have him go in a plastic bag inside the car. It was either that or risk stepping outside with wildlife all around us.
That experience taught me a big lesson. Now I always travel with disposable urinal bags in our car because you never know when a bathroom emergency will hit, especially in drive through wildlife parks or remote areas. It is one of my top travel tips for parents traveling with kids.
Being inside the vehicle helped keep noise levels controlled and gave our son a predictable environment while still feeling adventurous.
Trains and Transportation History
South Dakota State Railroad Museum
This museum is a quieter stop featuring historic railcars and train exhibits. It is a good fit for children who enjoy transportation themed attractions.
Where We Stayed
We stayed near Rushmore Mall, which made grabbing meals and supplies very convenient.
What worked well for our family:
- Spacious rooms
- Indoor pool, jacuzzi, and spa
- Easy access to restaurants and stores
Having a comfortable place to decompress after full days of sightseeing made a big difference.
Scenic Drive Into
While in South Dakota, we crossed into Wyoming for a scenic drive. Open highways, rolling landscapes, and quiet stretches of road created a peaceful reset between busy attractions.
