Exploring Cairo, Egypt: A Family Adventure
Our trip to Cairo, Egypt, was nothing short of unforgettable. It was our son’s first time visiting Africa, and we were blown away by the history, culture, and warm hospitality that greeted us. From the iconic pyramids to cruising along the Nile, Egypt is a destination that truly brings history to life, and it can be enjoyed by families with children too.
Arrival in Cairo
We landed late at night, a little after midnight. I had worried about arriving so late with a young child, but the process was smooth.
Visa Tip: Before going through immigration, you’ll need a visa. You can apply for an e-visa ahead of time or simply purchase one at the airport. At the visa window, it’s $25 USD per person, and you’ll receive a slip to present to the immigration officer.
By the time we cleared immigration and collected our luggage, the airport was still bustling with activity — it felt more like 1 p.m. than 1 a.m. Plenty of staff were available to help with luggage, which is useful when traveling with kids.
We had arranged an airport pickup through our hotel, which I highly recommend. Seeing our driver waiting outside with a sign bearing our name was such a relief in a new country.
Staying in Cairo
We stayed at the Sheraton Cairo Hotel and Casino, about 25 minutes from the airport. Be prepared, Cairo traffic is like New York City on steroids!
Highlights of our stay included:
-
Friendly bellmen who assisted us immediately with our luggage.
-
Tight but reassuring security checks at every hotel entrance.
-
Spacious rooms with views of the Nile River.
-
Excellent service, the staff made us feel like royalty.
-
A kid’s pool that our son absolutely loved.
The level of service was unmatched, and the hotel made a perfect base for our adventures.
Exploring the Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza
No trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. We arranged a private tour through our hotel, which provided both a driver and a knowledgeable guide.
Travel Tips for Families:
-
Wear comfortable shoes; the ground is sandy and uneven in spots.
-
Bring hats and sun protection; it’s hot and dry.
-
Be prepared for vendors and negotiate prices with guidance from your tour guide.
One of my favorite moments was buying a floppy hat for my son with “Egypt” embroidered on it. It’s a small memory, but so special.
We also rode camels, took panoramic photos of the pyramids, and enjoyed learning about the history from our guide. At the Sphinx, the experience was just as magical. Walking through a narrow pathway before seeing the Sphinx appear at the end was breathtaking. The sheer size and history of this ancient monument left us in awe.
Vendors at both sites will often offer to take creative photos for a small tip (usually $5 USD). It’s well worth it for fun, memorable shots.
Cruising the Nile River
One of the highlights of our stay was a Nile River dinner cruise. The boat featured two levels, delicious food, and live entertainment. I ordered chicken and rice; the rice was shaped like a pyramid, a fun and thoughtful touch.
Between the music, dancing, and the cool breeze on the top deck, the cruise was the perfect way to relax after a busy day of sightseeing.
Food & Final Impressions
Egypt quickly became one of our favorite food destinations. Fresh fruit drinks are a must-try; the strawberry and mango juices were some of the best I’ve ever had.
Our entire trip was filled with seamless service, incredible history, and unforgettable moments. Cairo is busy, loud, and overwhelming at times, but it’s also magical, welcoming, and truly one of a kind.
Final Tips for Visiting Cairo with Kids
-
Arrange airport transfers through your hotel for peace of mind.
-
Exchange currency at the airport or hotel ATM.
-
Keep small bills handy for tips.
-
Hold your child’s hand at historic sites; some areas are high with steep drops.
-
Pace yourself and stay hydrated; the heat can be draining.
Final Thoughts
Cairo exceeded our expectations in every way. From the moment we saw the pyramids to our night on the Nile, we felt immersed in history and culture. For families seeking adventure, Egypt is an unforgettable destination that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.
